Magnum Roller, Aeration and Rolling of Winter Wheat
The Harrowing and rolling of the winter what has taken place in Northeast England through necessity for the aid of the crop in April 2024 after a very long and prolonged wet winter with above average rainfall.
The crop was established on the 16th/17th of October, some was established on a plough based system and some with non-inversion.
The variety was chosen for its ability to established quickly.
Seed rate was 450 seeds/m2.
The soils are very slumped and have had 320kgs/Ha of Nitrogen with Sulphur.
The first field was harrowed and rolled twice on the 21-04-2024, ground is hard and capped the intention is to encourage tillering with the aggression of the tines scarifying, opening the soil up to allow uptake and then re-consolidating to help tillering with the 'Sheep's' foot affect.
The second field is a much lighter fertile soil and is prone to poppy, speedwell and cleavers weeds when in a 'white crop'. This is also prone to Manganese deficiency also so rolling to increase nutrient uptake and stem strength is beneficial.
The third field was originally ploughed and has suffered in the same way from the weather and a decision was taken to aerate the ground.
The machine used is a Genesis Aerator tined Aerator, adapted to our machinery within the grassland range with our Güttler Greenmaster.
We proceeded to run the machine at an angle to the growing crop and then intend to roll afterwards with a Güttler Master 6.40 roller to re-consolidate, an area of approximately 3Ha is under trail to see the results going forward in the middle of the field, the whole field will be rolled.
